## Why Cold Storage Lighting Requires Different Specifications

Cold storage facilities create several lighting environments within a single operation. A deep-freeze warehouse may remain well below 0°F, while a refrigerated loading area operates nearer standard commercial temperatures but sees heavy condensation when doors open. Blast freezers, refrigerated production rooms, dock vestibules, coolers, and machinery rooms all impose different demands on a fixture.

Low temperatures are often favorable for LED efficacy, but they are not automatically favorable for every component in the luminaire. Drivers, gaskets, lenses, internal wiring, surge protection devices, and motion-control components need operating-temperature ratings appropriate for the actual ambient condition. A fixture that performs well in a 35°F cooler may not be suitable for a -20°F freezer.

The fixture data sheet should state a minimum operating temperature that meets or exceeds the coldest expected condition.
