How Much Energy Do The Americans Need to Light Christmas?

Their entire study accounts just for the festive month, December last year, and the results that came out from the study were quite interesting. Looking at some of the surprisingly high levels of CO2 emission and cost they also suggested ways to control these impacts without losing the sparkling beauty of traditional holiday lights. First of all the study estimated the total energy consumed by the Christmas lights of a single home for the entire month of December. Generally, one 10-ft string of 50 incandescent bulbs uses 20W of electricity and an average home uses 10 such strings to light their Christmas tree and outdoor lights. For calculation purposes, it was considered that the lights are on for six hours a day, this shows that an average household will use 36 kWh of electricity in December only for these lights.

To have a better understanding of the nationwide impact, the group looked at the data that gives the number of households in each state and found above 90% of them celebrate Christmas to some degree. Even after considering only half of those households have used Christmas lights, the amount of electricity consumption was 3.5 billion kWh to power Christmas lights in the United States costing around $655 million. So each household has to pay an extra of average $13 to $20 on their December power bill. So far everything looks fine but the amount of CO2 emission to the atmosphere was 2 million tons!! Scarry. No??
