The invention of LED lights has fueled the rapid growth of the lighting industry. There is no available space in which a LED cannot be installed and proper lighting cannot be achieved. LED lights have many applications, but their use in industry is particularly important. Brighter lighting does more than just make things easier to see; it also makes the workplace safer, helping to reduce the number of accidents and injuries that workers suffer. Accidents in the workplace do not happen by chance. It happens as a result of inadequate training and ineffective safety protocols. There will be accidents if workers can’t spot potential dangers. When workers lack access to adequate lighting, they are more likely to sustain injuries due to a failure to correctly assess the location, shape, or velocity of an object.
One such safety measure that should be strictly adhered to in all commercial spaces is adequate lighting. Different studies have found that people’s health and productivity are negatively impacted by poor lighting. Dim lighting, for instance, has been linked to feelings of drowsiness and decreased ability to concentrate. Thankfully, the adoption rate of industrial LED lighting solutions in commercial spaces has increased dramatically in recent years. Investing in these lighting solutions can save a lot of money, and it also makes the workplace safer and better for the people who work there.
Industrial LED lighting solutions can reduce the likelihood of accidents occurring in the workplace in the following ways:
- Reduced shadows
Dark, secluded areas on the factory floor increase the danger of serious accidents. Superior light-emitting diodes (LEDs) illuminate a wider area, cast fewer shadows, and last much longer than high-intensity discharge (HID) bulbs. When properly cared for, LED bulbs can maintain their original brightness for up to 50,000 hours of use or about five years of constant use.
- Better color rendering
Standard light sources were used, despite significant CRI concerns. The CRI of a light fixture measures how accurately it reproduces colors in a given area, relative to what would be achieved with natural light. Workplace color perception can be greatly enhanced by switching to LED lights, which typically have a CRI of 70 or higher.
- Lower maintenance
LED lights are durable and long-lasting, so they rarely need repairs. With fewer repairs to be made, there will be no need for frequent ladder climbing. Also, nobody can get electrocuted while switching out lights because LEDs operate at such a low voltage. Traditional, non-LED light fixtures require more frequent and costly upkeep. These light sources have a short lifespan and need to be changed frequently, putting employees at risk and interfering with routine tasks.
- Attentive employees
Multiple studies conducted over the past decade have demonstrated that exposure to LED lighting has a restorative effect on mental fatigue, behavior, and performance. A significant number of accidents can be avoided in the workplace if employees are more aware of their surroundings and the potential for slipping, falling, or stumbling. There may also be a decreased risk of irritation, eye discomfort, and headaches when using cool-white LED lighting.
- No harmful materials
LEDs are the only mercury-free alternative to incandescent bulbs. There will be no mercury released into the environment during operation or after disposal. That being said, no extra care is needed when handling. Lead-free solder is used in the construction of these bulbs so that no harmful substances are released when the components fail.
- Instantant activation
Metal Halide lighting fixtures may take up to 30 minutes after being turned on to reach full brightness. The low light prevents any kind of productive activity during that time. Because of this, it is common practice for plant managers to leave Metal Halide lights on all night. But there’s no point in shelling out money for unnecessary illumination. When an LED light is turned on, it immediately becomes bright and usable. It is possible to turn on LEDs with a motion detector because they can be turned on and off quickly and reliably.
- Improved distribution
Workers will have a hard time, if not be unable to do their jobs safely, in areas with inadequate lighting. And while eyes adjust to the new brightness or darkness, accidents and injuries due to “momentary blindness” are common.
The light from LEDs can be aimed precisely where it’s needed, so it’s never wasted on the ceiling or dispersed unevenly. This beats omnidirectional HIDs. Omnidirectional lights have a lower efficiency than LEDs because at least half of the light produced must be reflected in the intended area.
When people think of the benefits of LED lighting, safety is usually the last thing that comes to mind. Switching from incandescent, fluorescent, or HID lighting to LED lighting, on the other hand, can improve visibility and awareness and lower the risk of accidents in any dangerous environment.
