What Does Class 1 Division 1 (C1D1) Mean?
Class I, Division 1 describes a location where an ignitable concentration of flammable gases or vapors exists under normal operating conditions, exists frequently because of repair or maintenance work, or could exist because equipment failure or process malfunction releases the hazardous gas at the same time the failure could produce an arc, spark, or excessive heat. That definition comes from Article 500 of the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70), the code every hazardous-location electrical installation in the United States is inspected against. Fixtures rated for Class I, Division 1 are tested and listed to UL 844, the standard for luminaires used in hazardous (classified) locations. A C1D1 fixture is built so that if the flammable gas inside its enclosure ignites, the enclosure contains the explosion and cools the escaping gases below their ignition temperature before they reach the surrounding atmosphere — this is the "explosion-proof" or "flameproof" design principle (marked Ex d or Ex db on the fixture).
What's the Difference Between Class I, Class II, Division 1, and Division 2?
Four separate variables combine to describe a hazardous location: the Class (what kind of hazardous material), the Division (how often the hazard is present), the Group (which specific gas, vapor, or dust), and the Temperature Code (the maximum surface temperature the fixture is allowed to reach). Mixing these up is the most common specification error on a hazardous-location order.

Groups further narrow the gas or dust the fixture is tested against: Group A (acetylene), B (hydrogen), C (ethylene), and D (propane, gasoline vapors) for Class I; Group E (metal dust), F (carbonaceous dust), and G (grain dust) for Class II. A fixture's full rating — for example "Class I, Division 1, Groups C, D" — means it is listed for ethylene- and propane-type gas hazards specifically, not automatically for the more easily-ignited acetylene or hydrogen groups (A and B), which require separate testing and are typically only found on Division 2 or intrinsically safe fixtures within a given family.

The EXI, EX-C, and EXD families share the same published classification string — Class I, Division 1, Groups C, D; Class I, Division 2, Groups A, B, C, D; Class II, Division 1 and 2, Groups E, F, G; and Class III — along with matching ATEX (Ex db IIC T6 Gb) and IECEx markings, IP66 ingress protection, and IK10 impact resistance. The EX-MV01 portable light stands apart: it is intrinsically safe (marked Ex ia IIC T4 Ga) rather than flameproof, and its Division 1 listing extends to Groups A and B — acetylene and hydrogen — which the linear and round fixtures above do not carry.
Not Every "Explosion-Proof" Fixture Is Division 1
Two families in the Maes explosion-proof lineup — EXA and EXH — publish UL 844 markings for Class I, Division 2 and Class II, Divisions 1 and 2, but their rating strings do not include Class I, Division 1. Both are IP66/IK10-rated, explosion-resistant fixtures suited to Division 2 areas (where the hazard is only present during an abnormal event), but they are not a substitute for a Division 1 listing where the code requires one. Confirming the exact rating string on the fixture's own UL 844 marking — not the general "explosion-proof" category it is sold under — is the single most important check before specifying a fixture for a Division 1 space.
What Do the Certification Markings Actually Mean?
A Maes explosion-proof fixture typically carries several markings stacked together, and each one answers a different question:
UL 844 — the North American listing for luminaires in hazardous locations; the classification string (Class, Division, Group) that follows it is the fixture's actual code rating.
Ex db (flameproof enclosure) — the enclosure contains and cools an internal ignition rather than preventing gas entry; used on the EXI, EX-C, EXD, and EXA/EXH families.
Ex ia (intrinsically safe) — the circuit itself is limited to energy levels too low to ignite the surrounding atmosphere, even under fault conditions; used on the portable EX-MV01.
T-code (e.g., T6) — the maximum surface temperature the fixture will reach, which must stay below the auto-ignition temperature of the specific gas present; T6 corresponds to a maximum surface temperature of 85 °C.
ATEX / IECEx — the equivalent European and international certifications, relevant for facilities operating under those regulatory frameworks rather than, or in addition to, UL 844.
Where Is Class 1 Division 1 Lighting Required?
Division 1 spaces are defined by continuous or frequent gas exposure during normal operation, which typically limits them to a narrower set of locations than Division 2:
Oil, Gas, and Chemical Processing
Interiors of process vessels during open work, areas immediately around venting or sampling points, and zones where flammable liquids are transferred in open or semi-open systems under normal operation.
Inside an Active Spray or Paint Booth
Per NFPA 33, fixtures mounted directly inside the interior spray zone of a paint booth — where flammable vapor concentrations are present during normal spraying — must be listed for Class I, Division 1. Tank Farms and Bulk Storage
Loading racks, vapor-recovery equipment, and any area where flammable liquid transfer routinely creates a gas atmosphere during normal operating hours.
How Should Class 1 Division 1 Fixtures Be Installed and Certified?
UL 844 listing covers the fixture as manufactured — installation practices determine whether that listing holds up in the field:
Match the fixture's Group letters to the site's actual gas classification. A Groups C, D fixture is not rated for a Group A or B (acetylene or hydrogen) atmosphere.
Verify the T-code against the specific gas's auto-ignition temperature for the process, not a general assumption.
Use only conduit, seals, and fittings rated for the same classification — a Division 1 fixture wired through non-rated conduit or an unsealed fitting breaks the classification at the connection point, not at the fixture.
Keep the enclosure's flame-path surfaces (the machined joints on a flameproof fixture) free of paint, corrosion, or damage during maintenance — these surfaces are engineered to a specific tolerance, and refinishing or over-tightening them can compromise the listing.
